Bioseparation:
  • recovery and purification of proteins;
  • recovery and purification of nucleic acids;
  • cell separation;
  • RNA selection;
  • bacterium capture;
  • binding free biotins;
  • segregating polynucleotides, nucleic acids or proteins.
Magnetic separation technology is used in both the medical and biotechnology industries. The method is based on the introduction of microspheres of ferrous oxide superparamagnetic nanocrystals of 20-25nm to a biological substance such as DNA or antibodies.

Nanocrystals do not display ferromagnetism on their own, but are magnetically susceptible when influenced by a magnetic field.

When added to a sample the nanocrystals bind to particular cells. Exposing the cells to a magnetic field initiates the process of separation. The bound cells are attracted to the magnetic field and selected cells can be extracted (i.e. lymphatic cells from red blood cells). Receptor sites can be located using scanning electron microscopy.

Magnetic separation technology has several advantages over conventional extraction methods: ease of application; short processing time and; does not require complicated or expensive equipment.
